Hey folks, been trolling this forum for awhile and finally decided to register and step in the fray.

I have a problem with a site I'm designing for a client being COMPLETELY broken in IE6. I'm not worried too much about designing for IE6 (I'm fine if things are just a bit wonky) but I can't have the site completely not work.

URL in question: http://www.brinkmannswineandspirits.com/test

Things are really really bad in IE6. The body background doesn't load, the top DIV doesn't load, the logo doesn't show in the photo slideshow, the nav bar and links are gone... it's horrible.

So I've come seeking some guidance. I don't know if there's something wrong with my DOCTYPE or the CSS I'm using just no good for IE6, but if anybody's on a PC and can give me some advice I would greatly appreciate it.

I really really don't want to go back to table-based layout and javascript mouseovers, but since this is a normal client website and not a progressive experimental project, I have to do what I have to do.

Thanks guys and gals!

IE6 doesn't support PNG files w/o alot of hoo-ha. Also: while I applaud you for going strict with your <doctype> , I'd stick w/transitional until you're more comfortable.

What's sad is I KNEW about IE6 and PNGs and I forgot. Thanks for reminding me because I probably wouldn't have remembered otherwise.

I'm currently doing some more research on DOCTYPES and will take your advice on transitional... just have to learn the difference.

I am wondering though why IE6 isn't even reading my background image on "body". It's a GIF.

THanks for the reply.

Well I checked the site on my roommate's PC running IE7 and while it's not as bad as IE6 it's still broken. The body background (which is just a GIF) isn't even loading at all, and there's a top DIV that's a repeating color bar that isn't showing up. Also the navbar isn't showing up.

I'm so at a loss here. I'm going to try messing with DOCTYPES but I'm not sure if that will help at all.

God I really hate IE. Really really really.

I wish there was an IE validation checker... anybody know of anything like that?

Thanks.

Update for IE7. I use longhand background properties (background-image, etc.) and it makes it work.

Very very weird.
