Ok, I've got something that i've wanted to ask for a long time, but have never found the proper place to ask:

Where the hell do you guys get your inspiration, imagination, ideas, etc?!?

I'm constantly wracking my brains to try to come up with good layouts, and i always just barely 'skate by'. I don't know of any good rules of thumb for color combinations, or layouts, or anything at all.

I assume since the rest of you have great looking sites that you have some 'trick' or 'rule of thumb' or pattern, etc. Any advice is much appreciated.

Also, i'm about to post a separate thread for linx to my site, and i'd appreciate feedback on that too:

Thanx.

I've been to zen garden, i even submitted to it (but got rejected), but i hadn't heard of the rest, thanx.

What i'm asking is not for examples of work, so much as "what ways of thinking promote beauty". What methodologies do you use? etc.

It all comes with experience. I thought I was such a great designer years ago but I didn't know a thing. I've come a long way and have a long ways to go. But, the fact that I know how much more I need to learn just shows how much more mature I am now.

What really helped me was working under someone that had lots of experience and could keep me inline and help me develop. Look into internships and work for nothing, anything for experience.

First, relax! Design inspiration can be found EVERYWHERE. From window displays in retail stores to Communication Arts magazine. But I find a lot of younger designers tend to grab onto the first idea they like and put the blinders on. Play. Sketch! Read. Write and if possible openly discuss with peers (off-line).

Magazines will show you all sorts of exercises for boosting creativity during lulls. Just relax and observe.

Flickr is a fun one. I personally like to enjoy nature, the colors are amazing. Take pictures of things that you find interesting, it may inspire different designs if not just colours. Drawing is also a good practice. Letting your mind wander as you scratch pen to paper, ideas can flow and maybe you can gain focus when you're in a slump.

Then again I'm no designer. Don't pay much attention to me.
