Anyone have a reference or some knowledge with meta tags and what they accomplish for you.
I'm really looking for information on the more obscure one. |

Normally, I am using these meta-tags:
Author, Copyright, Description, Keywords, Language, Robots. The first for are descriptive - easy to understand what you put there. They give the information for the bots about your site. What you see at the search engine results is basicly a content from the description tag. For the robots info - go here: http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/meta-user.html Sometimes i even use such as ICBM, DC.title, geo.position, geo.region, geo.placename ... I pretty much use what Niko does, although I generally leave off keywords and if I do put it in there I use 5-10 words at the most.
I also throw in one to disable to IE image toolbar. I hate that thing popping up on my site when I don't want it to. _________________ :: web usability and design :: - unstructure :: boston modern art gallery :: - tötre gallery |

Sort of off the topic, I have been out of active web designing for 6 years, and used to use keywords all the time back then. In the interim, I've done a few simple sites for desperate musician friends, and continued to use keywords, despite some very extreme statements by other folks that keywords don't work. All of the sites were, in the first year, consistently in the top 20 search returns. (I usually handed off the sites after babysitting the first year. Usually this meant that there would be no periodic refreshing of information, and the rating would slip.)
Granted, I wrote all the copy, for the most part, and made sure that there were plenty of references to what each site was about as well in all of the text. I've used 5 keywords, I've used 20, and everything else that seemed appropriate. So I figure keywords don't hurt, if you have time to do them. |

They don't hurt at all and I usually throw a few in there, but I use other techniques to help with SEO since they don't seem to be as weighted as they used to be. _________________ :: web usability and design :: - unstructure :: boston modern art gallery :: - tötre gallery |

Sure but there are a whole slew of meta tags available for use. Not all of them have to do with keywords or search engine descriptions and such.
What is every possible meta tag that's available, and how can they be used to our advantages? There must be a list somewhere, i've googled and such and can't seem to find it myself. |

Those look like some good picks niko.
The trick is lining up all your ducks. You've got the meta tags, image alt tags, page text, what else... Getting all of those stacked with the actual page content, and keep it fresh with updates. There is no magical meta tags that will boost your page rankings. The fact that some people decide to use some very obscure meta tags is probably just more work for them. |

Keep in mind that I'm not really trying to find out ways to boost page rank with this post. I'm simply looking for a listing of all available meta tags for my knowledge base .. call it a hobby if you want, I'm merely interested in what's out there.
Thanks for the links Nico. Now i just need some spare time to read them over. |
